ARDCOLM CHURCH (Illustrated by Michael Devereux)

Ardcolm Church was built in 1766, measuring 74ft x24ft, and was consecrated on August 20th of that year.

It occupies a prime site where once stood a castle which, with an acre of land, was given for that purpose by the Bishop. The expense was defrayed partly by subscriptions and partly by the parishioners. The interior of the church is spacious and one of the most attractive features is a beautiful stained glass window erected to the memory of

Rev. Henry Wynne. He was Rector of Ardcolm for ten years until his death on 7th September, 1847.
Also there is a neat tablet in memory of Lieut. Col. Jones Watson who was killed by the Insurgents at the Three Rocks in 1798 and interred in the churchyard at Carrick, and another in memory of Edward Turner from Screen who, with others, was piked to death on Wexford Bridge on 20th June, 1798. In 1820 the Curate of Ardcolm had an annual salary of £75 (£1.40 per week).
